Adventure in a Bottle

Molly, being a hungry wee lass, has never really had serious problems with taking a bottle filled with hand-pumped Milk de Mum (sheesh, sounds like something that would empty your wallet at a boutique grocery). I always have the honour of giving bottles, as the presence of the milk mum in the room is supposed to be confusing for some babies. Oh sure, Molly would balk as the silicone nipple touched her lips, moving rapidly through anger, denial and, finally, acceptance, but she has always polished it off in the end.

Sarah was planning an evening out with her friend on Thursday, so I tried giving Molly a bottle on Wednesday to make sure the bottle thing was still working for her since the weekend feed. After several minutes of deafening screams, I gave up and passed her to Sarah, who was cringing and clinging onto the kitchen counter to keep herself from running over and breastfeeding to quell the pathetic din. This first bottle refusal by Molly left me quite shaken and a little paranoid about the upcoming night out.

Thursday afternoon rolled around, and Sarah tried to feed Molly before she headed out. To my horror, Molly had a quick munch on an almost finished breast, and then Sarah raced out the door for Rangoli. I was left with a relatively happy baby who went down for a nap. At 8:30, she awoke and played with Erin (who had heard my plight and dropped in for back up), while I set up. Around 9:00, Erin and I took a deep breath, and she passed me the rapidly tonguing baby. I gingerly pretended that I was a breast, and offered the bottle to Molly.

Imagine our surprise when she tucked into it without a squeak! Not only that, but she also held onto the bottle, and attempted to direct where she preferred the nipple. Apparently I had bunged up things so badly the day before that she was taking the situation into her own hands! After that, Molly and I went to bed, and Sarah stayed out late to see Cabaret.

So yes, if anyone has an apartment for rent, Molly is now ready to strike out on her own (uh, with me along to warm the bottles).

Yeah Sarah! Getting out for an evening to yourself must have felt fantastic. Is my husband reading this? Hint-hint.
