Car-Free Commercial Drive

Today was the Car-Free Commercial Drive festival, which shut down 10 blocks of Commercial Drive to make way for street hockey, drumming, busking, chopper bikes, roller derby, bike parade, healing corner, country music, Italian sausages, turn tabling, and every kind of folk you can imagine. The photos below are from the morning, just after Brazil won the game and just as the festival organizers were setting up (oh yes, it was that busy before setup). By afternoon, you could barely walk in either direction for the people! We took the rather discontent Molly out to check out the action several times. She loves hanging out in her carrier, zigging the passing foo. I forgot to get someone to take a picture of her checking out the madding crowd, but she eventually tired of the action, let her bonnet slip over her eyes and had a nice nap between the soapbox, the slam poetry stage, and the improptu belly dancing workshop. Instead, I have included a photo of this crazy lady I saw coming down the ramp into our building with an empty stroller. Takes all kinds, eh?

Hey, it's a Calgary shopping cart! Didn't think I'd see one in Vancouver. In Calgary, people get someone else to carry their small child and push an empty stroller to the store in order to stuff it full of items or use it to carry their coats, lunch, etc. I'm not making this up. I think they mistake it for a chuckwagon.

Damn damn damn! I missed it again this year! Instead I spent my time on a loading bay at Canada Place, nestled between a Cruise Ship and a Dumpster. I assure you that between the cruise ship and us, we have more than made up for the lack of emissions on Commercial Drive. Don't worry...Harper's coming and he has some green emission coupons to give us.
